I am a professional film critic, a dual citizen of both the United States and Ecuador, with the latter country being where I publish my reviews (in Spanish) for a national daily. I grew up in New York, reading Andrew Sarris in “The Village Voice,” and later studied with both him and his film critic wife, Molly Haskell.

I know you are a “satirist,” but placing the pejoratively dismissive adjective “dinosaur” before “Andrew Sarris” is really the very worst sort of juvenile punk attitudinizing masquerading as sharp wit. And it smacks of ageism: suggesting that we are supposed to snicker along with you at Andrew Sarris because he is a 55-year veteran of film criticism, and for some vague reason, his age and life experience disqualify him from being taken seriously. Really, shouldn’t it be the reverse? As it is, by coincidence, my PhD stepfather shares the exact same birthday (Halloween, 1928) as Andrew Sarris, yet has published a book a year for the last ten years, as well as a weekly political column in various Latin American media. It would never occur to me to condescendingly refer to him as a “dinosaur.”

Do you really believe that somehow this makes your own work come off as more insightful? As it is, you are 42-years old, and it won’t be too long before your younger rivals strike punk-cynical poses in print dismissing YOU as a “dinosaur.”
